What should I wear for holiday pictures

WHAT TO WEAR FOR your FAMILY Holiday session

The Holiday season is just around the corner, which means it's time to start thinking about the outfit you will wear for your holiday session. The #1 biggest question I receive from clients before their session is always this: “What should wear?”

Holiday pictures should be fun and festive. One of the key things to remember - you don’t have to me “matchie-matchie” (think same shirt, same pants)! However, everyone in the photo should complement each other by having complementary colors. After all, you want your portraits to capture the best and happiest memories of the season, as well as images you can put on your holiday cards for friends and family.

TIPS ON WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR FAMILY CHRISTMAS PHOTOS

  • Keep it simple. Festive colors like green, deep reds, burgundy are great. You also can’t go wrong with neutral colors like gold, creams and tans.

  • I typically suggest sticking to neutrals for family pictures but honestly, I love pops of color for family Christmas and holiday photos! Just nothing too bold, bright and patterned that it takes away from your beautiful faces and the natural connection shared between you and your loved ones. A big exception to the rule is holiday stripes and argyle patterns – those make for a classic Christmas look. Hmm - how about holiday pajamas?

  • Sweaters are always a good idea for the holiday season. The more texture, the better! Do you want a formal look? Elevate your attire by dressing up for the occasion. Think an evening dress, suits and tie, tuxedo.

  • Inside or outside? Even though it may a bit chilly outside, outdoor pictures are fun! It's the perfect opportunity to get that warm scarf and hat or cozy mittens.

  • Accessories!!! Pairing an accessory or two with your Christmas outfit can really help bring some extra dimension to your images, and be a nice tie-in when you’re coordinating with your family. Big statement necklaces bring a lot of pop to the photos, while the smaller, delicate ones are not as noticeable on camera. Belts, bracelets, and earrings bring some visual interest, so choose one or two that don’t compete for attention.

  • Big holiday bows are timeless and a classic way to add some girly timelessness to your portraits.

  • It’s your session - be creative, be unorthodox. If you have some creative ideas. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box!

  • Create a family tradition:

The holiday season is the perfect time to start your family tradition. Think of creative ways to make your session fun, interesting and most of all memorable. After all, your friends and loved ones will look forward to, and enjoy your annual family picture every year. Don’t forget those holiday keepsakes for your home, such as albums, wall art and print collections.

Happy Holiday!
