What to Wear for your Fall Mini Session

It's that time of the year again - It's FALL in the DMV!

The leaves will be falling soon, and the warm colors of red, orange, and gold will be the perfect canvas for creating stunning photographs. Let's capture the warmth and coziness of this season.

My most asked question for fall mini’s is:   What do we wear for our fall mini session?

Let’s keep it quick and simple. Here are my recommendations:

  • Earthy Tones: Embrace the autumn palette with warm and earthy colors like deep reds, oranges, yellows, browns, and forest greens. These hues complement the fall foliage beautifully.

  • Layers: The weather can be unpredictable in the fall, so layering is key. Pair a cozy sweater or cardigan with a long-sleeved shirt or blouse. This allows you to adjust your clothing as needed for comfort and style.

  • Textures: Incorporate textured fabrics like tweed, knitwear, corduroy, or suede. They not only provide warmth but also add visual interest to your photos.

  • Accessories: Scarves, hats, and gloves can not only keep you warm but also serve as stylish accents. A chunky scarf or a cute beanie can add a touch of personality to your outfit.

  • Footwear: opt for comfortable yet stylish footwear. Boots, ankle boots, or stylish sneakers can be both practical and fashionable for a fall shoot.

  • Coordinated Outfits: If you're doing a family session, coordinate your outfits without being too matchy-matchy. Stick to a consistent color palette to create a harmonious look.

  • Remember its Fall! Avoid Neon or Bright Colors: Steer clear of neon or overly bright colors, as they can clash with the autumn backdrop. Subdued and muted tones work best.

  • Classic Denim: A pair of well-fitted jeans can be versatile and timeless, adding a casual touch to your look.

  • Personal Style: Don't forget to incorporate your personal style into your outfit choices. Be comfortable and confident in what you wear.

When planning outfits for your family please remember to wear clothes you and your family are comfortable in.   When adults/kids are uncomfortable it will show in photos. To capture joy and genuine moments of connection between family members I encourage you to play with your child, throw them up in the air, spin them around, or get down on their level for tickles/snuggles. Keep this in mind when choosing outfits.
